Imagine an inclusive workplace where people get along and enjoy working together.  It takes a lot of energy to not get along with people, so why not use diversity to get rid of those issues?

I enjoy helping organizations get rid of labels and focus on behaviors that help people get along with each other and leave conflict behind.

Business people frequently ask me why they should care at all about diversity. This is a very natural question and my answer is usually related to what direction the business wishes to go in. Certain policies and behaviors lead in one direction while others create different results. The outcome is up to each company. Think about the following outcomes when thinking about how to create a diversity friendly environment, these are the potential payoffs for your company of paying attention to diversity.

1. Increased trust.

2. Greater collaboration.

3. Resolution of differences.

4. Improved communication.

5. Better staff cohesion.

Now think of the effects of each of these five outcomes and project what each of them might do for your company’s bottom line. Imagine if your company excels in even one area. What would happen if it achieved all five?

Companies who commit to making diversity a positive force in the workplace reap substantial benefits because they get rid obstacles to success. The good news is that businesses can move in this direction at any time by planning and implementing a diversity strategy that, over time, leads to the outcomes we’ve listed. All it takes is sustained effort and commitment.

Diversity is really just a way to describe the different people in our companies.  If you think about it, no two employees are the same or do things in exactly the same manner.  Leaders have a choice of how they view diversity.  Those who view it as a threat tend to get a certain kind of results; usually in the form of a workforce full of conflict and mistrust.  The result of creating that kind of atmosphere is that we get less work done and the work we do accomplish takes longer and is more difficult.

I'm a big fan of doing things that help our lives easier.  Diversity is one of those tools that can actually make our lives more enjoyable in the workplace.  It takes a lot of energy to keep conflict and mistrust going so why not harness your employees' efforts to go in a positive direction?

Celebrating the diversity in your company gives you access to a larger pool of talent that will invigorate and strengthen your organization.  When we welcome people to share their particular strengths and experiences with us we encourage them to participate at a much higher level in the success of our organiztions.  Diversity then become a tool we can use to get things done.

Your view of diversity will affect the functioning of your life and workplace.  You can create dynamic movement or some other outcome but the choice is yours.  I help organization use the power of diversity to create greater success in their organizations.  It's like suddenly having access to an untapped cache of talent and resources.
