I think of a facilitator as a neutral outside person who is able to come into a business or organization and help them get more done with less effort. A facilitator’s job is literally to make his or her client’s job easier. Facilitators can help businesses and other organizations in many ways including the following example regarding employee morale.
A successful business owner asked me recently who whether it was more important to focus on employee engagement or morale in these tough economic times. What I’ve found and my clients have put into practice is an approach that builds a foundation that allows the business to both engage and build morale in its workforce. The key point for owner and managers to think about is what they want their workplace to look like. Consider the following points as you build an engaged and productive workforce.
1. Are you promoting open two-
2. Are your employees asked to excel based on their talents or are they dropped into positions?
3. Are employees regularly and genuinely praised?
4. Do your managers delegate effectively and spot talent regularly?
5. Do you have a methodology in place for helping people work together?
6. Do you have a system in place for people to develop and achieve goals?
How you answer these questions will give you an idea whether your workplace is building a foundation for success or otherwise. If you already do all six of these points then you are probably running a company that benefits from high employee morale and engagement.
When we build a well considered foundation we reap the rewards in the long run. This can be done through working with a facilitator. A facilitator is a trained person who can help you address any number of issues in the workplace including communication, conflict resolution, problem solving, morale and motivation, leadership, running effective meetings and team building. It’s up to you what you want to use a facilitator for because there are many ways he or she can make your life easier.
Facilitators understand how to make your next meeting or retreat run more smoothly. They are highly effective because they don’t bring all the baggage and history to meetings that employees carry. This enables the facilitator to go deeper and get more done because he or she is not part of any office dynamic.
The next time you’re thinking of having a retreat or meeting for your staff consider a facilitator to help you do it. Shop around and find someone who is a good fit for the kind of event you’re looking for. I particularly enjoy retreats where people have to take a good look at themselves and grow in some way. I enjoy working with talented groups of innovative thinkers who aren’t afraid to try new things.
